    John Singleton, born on January 6, 1968 is a Hollywood Film director. John Singleton studied Cinematic Arts at Southern California University, where he took up screenwriting. He also won three writing recognitions from the school that made Creative Artists Agency offered him a contract while he was in his second year in the university.

     The script he wrote for Boyz n the Hood was bought by Columbia Pictures in 1991 and was allocated a budget of $7 million for it. In 1991 the film’s portrayal of life in the crime dominated south of Central L.A., he was a nominee for the category Best Director in the Academy Award. Singleton, the first African American, was selected for a nomination for the said award. He was also the youngest nominee for such an award. The movie was also a nominee for the category Best Original Screenplay.

    After winning, he came up with Poetic Justice by 1993 and by 1995 with Higher Learning. He was the producer of the in the film titled Hustle and Flow critically praised in 2005 and started directing Four Brothers that became a hit.
